INSTRUCTIONS FOR PROCEEDING
The main target for the SA Winter Workshop 2005 is to experiment with geometries. Birth and Death in the city of Seoul is the program that will be used as an excuse to create particular geometries –forms. The brief of the workshop is asking the students to find the form that represents one particular ¡°story¡± related with birth-and-death. Therefore, each group of students should build up a coherent birth-and-death story in relationship with a particular site (that will be given), site that contains in itself two main characteristics: a place where the balance of life is no longer positive or negative, just even and a place where we can have the experience of artificial and natural at the same time.
Each group will have to work on a proposal that, first, identifies who or what is dying and giving birth in that site (natural or artificial), second, how both, the just born and the just ready to die are sharing matter, energy, information... in other words, how they affect each other. Finally, the group of students have to propose their particular stand within this situation¡¦ what are you proposing? Are you going to change the interaction between dead and just born? How?
Whatever the proposal (story) is, the final and most important requirement will be to create a formalistic expression of your proposal. Students will have to find the relationships that exist between the program and its form. One of the challenges of the workshop is to find those channels of communication between geometry (form) and program (birth and death). There is no particular scale for that¡¦ your proposal could be closer to a building or closer to a infrastructure or closer to a topography¡¦ Each approach from students to the given program will have its own scale.
