뉴욕 갤러리 실속탐방
뉴욕에서 열리는 전시회는 예술계에 있어서 가장 첨단의 이슈들을 다루고 있는 것으로, 방대한 량의 출판물들과 어울러져서 문화계의 새 흐름을 만들고 있습니다.
(건축계만 보아도, 1988년의 필립 존슨 기획의 MOMA '해체주의전'을 통해서 우리는 렘 쿨하스 프랑크 게리, 베르나르 츄미 등의 작가들을 새롭게 접하게 되었고, 최근의 Mies in America, Mies in Berlin 등의 전시회를 통해서 Mies Van Der Rohe를, 그리고 최근의 Whitney Museum의 Diller+Scofidio의 전시회를 통해서 건축의 또다른 개념들을 접하는 것을 볼 수 있습니다.)
실제 뉴욕에 살면서 한달이 멀다 하고 주요 갤러리들을 다시 찾게 되는 것은, 이런 건축 이외에도, 미술 공예 그리고 현대디지털 아트 등 끊임없이 새로운 창조물들의 전시회를 전략적으로 기획하는 갤러리들의 노력에 기인하기도 한 것 같습니다.
워싱턴 DC의 모두 무료인 갤러리들과 달리 뉴욕의 갤러리들은 꽤 많은 입장료를 내야하는데, 이를 피할 수 있는 지침서를 다음에 적어보았습니다. 날짜와 시간 만 잘 골라서 가면 좋은 전시회를 저렴하게 볼 수 있는데, 이는 Pay as you wish 제도를 잘 이용하는 것입니다.
Pay as you wish는 그야말로, 자기 맘대로 돈을 낼 수 있는 제도인데, 10센트를 내도 되고 100달라를 내도 되는 '자기맘대로' 법입니다.
