International Postgraduate Summer School
Urban Intellectuals - Scholarly Interventions in the Cities
This summer school course will explore the role of intellectuals in the
shaping of urban life and urban development. We will attempt to
determine 1) who are urban intellectuals and on what grounds can they be
called intellectuals, 2) the extent of their influence in cities around
the world, and, particularly 3) the distinctive features in the visions
of Nordic intellectuals. This course will focus on the various
/practical/ influence that urban theories and intellectuals have had on
the historical shaping of city spaces. In addition it will examine how
the ideas of visionaries, intellectuals and scholars can shape urban
planning and the ways urban environments are experienced.
Lecturers on the course include Professor Robert A. Beauregard (New
School University, New York), Professor Anne Haila (University of
Helsinki), and leading contemporary urban intellectuals of Finland.
Applications from PhD students and advanced MA students in urban studies all over the world are welcomed!
